Bella was glad that they’d talked. That the white flag of truce had been shown, the olive branch accepted and now they were back to normal.

She’d debated mentioning the pottery experience, but she remembered he’d mentioned wanting to give it a try and how else could she prove to him that she wanted to put the kiss behind them and just move on?

By showing I was happy to spend some time with him.

And unlike in the pod, they would not be alone. They would be in a class, with other people, out in public. It would be fine. No accidental kisses. No forced proximity. No opportunity to stare into each other’s eyes and forget the world.

It would be fun. Light-hearted. A laugh. Maybe they’d both get to make something they’d be proud of. And once it was done, they would have moved past the awkwardness of the weekend and how it had felt to walk to school with him this morning.

Eva Watts was her first patient of the afternoon. She came in looking pale, with dark circles under her eyes. ‘I’m just so tired all the time. It’s like I’ve got no energy to do anything.’

‘How long have you felt this way?’

‘A couple of months, to be honest. I kept thinking it would get better, but it just seems to be getting worse. I’m having headaches, too, and I’ve got this weird tingling in my fingers.’

Bella examined her, noting her pallor, her low blood pressure and the fact that Eva seemed a little underweight for her height. And she had bruising on her forearms that looked as though she’d been held down. It was worrying. ‘How’s your appetite?’

‘Not great, to be honest.’

‘Do you eat red meat? Leafy greens?’

‘No. Chicken and fish usually, with rice or pasta, that kind of thing. My boyfriend is on this health kick. He goes to the gym, he’s training to be a bodybuilder and he didn’t want to be tempted by bad things in the house, so we eat a very simple diet.’

The boyfriend sounded as if he might be much stronger than her, then. ‘Does he take supplements?’

‘There’s a cupboard full.’

‘Do you take any?’

She shook her head. ‘I’m not training and he doesn’t like muscly women.’

‘What are your periods like?’

She sighed. ‘Heavy. Painful. Like clots. I flood a lot.’

Bella nodded. ‘I think you might be anaemic, Eva. I’d like to do a blood test to confirm.’

‘Oh. Okay.’

‘We’ll do it now, if that’s all right?’

Eva nodded.

Bella opened her cupboard, where she kept her blood-test equipment, but she was all out of purple vials and needed to go to the stockroom to get some more. ‘I won’t be a moment.’ She excused herself and headed to the room where they kept everything a surgery could need—blood-sampling equipment, the emergency bag with defibrillator, oxygen canisters, swabs, pads, bandages, saline, tongue depressors, tools used for IUD insertions, scissors, tweezers, everything and anything was kept in there in neatly labelled drawers and maintained by their health care assistant, Carrie, who ordered the stock.
